ZEVACHIM 20 (18 Iyar) - dedicated by Avi and Lily Berger of Queens, N.Y., in memory of Lily's father, Mr. Benny Krieger (Chananel Benayahu ben Harav Yisrael Avraham Aba), zt"l, who passed away on Lag ba'Omer 5763. Mr. Krieger exemplified Ahavas Chesed, Ahavas Torah and Ahavas Eretz Yisrael.

SUMMARY

1. A Kohen may not perform any Avodah in the Beis ha'Mikdash, not even the burning of the Eimurim, without first washing his hands and feet from the Kiyor.

2. If a Kohen washes his hands and feet at night from the Kiyor, he must wash them again in the morning, even if he is in middle of the Avodah, according to Rebbi. Rebbi Elazar b'Rebbi Shimon disagrees.

3. It is a Safek whether, according to Rebbi Elazar b'Rebbi Shimon, the water in the Kiyor becomes Pasul when left overnight without being lowered into the ground.

4. According to Rebbi Yosi b'Rebbi Yehudah, Kodshei Kodashim may be slaughtered only in the north of the Azarah, directly opposite the Mizbe'ach.

5. According to Rebbi Elazar b'Rebbi Shimon, Kodshei Kodashim may also be slaughtered between the Ulam and the Mizbe'ach, in the north of the Azarah.

6. According to Rebbi, Kodshei Kodashim may also be slaughtered in the 22 Amos between Sha'ar Nikanor and the Mizbe'ach, in the north of the Azarah.

7. Rebbi Yochanan says that if a Kohen washes his hands and feet from the Kiyor before dawn for the Terumas ha'Deshen, he is not required to wash again for the subsequent Avodos.

8. If a Kohen extends his hands out of the Azarah, he is not required to wash them again from the Kiyor.

9. If a Kohen's hand becomes Tamei, he must immerse his hands in a Mikvah. He does not need to wash again from the Kiyor.

10. A Kohen may wash his hands and feet from any Kli Shares in the Azarah. He may not wash outside of the Azarah.

11. If a Kohen becomes Tamei before Sheki'ah and he immediately immerses himself, it is a Safek whether he must wash his hands and feet again from the Kiyor after nightfall.

12. Rebbi Chiya b'Rebbi Yosef maintains that the Kohen who will burn the Parah Adumah must wash his hands and feet from a Kli Shares inside the Azarah. Rebbi Yochanan disagrees.

A BIT MORE

1. Failure to burn the Eimurim on the Mizbe'ach does not affect the atonement of the Korban. Nevertheless, it is an Avodah, for which the Kohen must wash his hands and feet from the Kiyor.

2. According to Rebbi Elazar b'Rebbi Shimon, the Kohen may do the Avodah for ten days straight without washing his hands again from the Kiyor, as long as he does not leave the Azarah or take his mind off the Avodah.

3. According to Rebbi, the water of the Kiyor certainly becomes Pasul with Linah. Rebbi Elazar b'Rebbi Shimon maintains that a Kohen who washed his hands and feet from the Kiyor does not need to wash again the next day, and thus perhaps the water in the Kiyor is also not Pasul with Linah.

4. Kodshei Kodashim may not be slaughtered east or west of the Mizbe'ach, even in the north of the Azarah, according to Rebbi Yosi b'Rebbi Yehudah.

5. However, according to Rebbi Elazar b'Rebbi Shimon, Kodshei Kodashim may not be slaughtered east of the Mizbe'ach in the 22 Amos between Sha'ar Nikanor and the Mizbe'ach, because that part of the Azarah is of lesser Kedushah.

6. However, everyone agrees that Kodshei Kodashim may not be slaughtered in the Beis ha'Chalifos, because it is impossible to see the Mizbe'ach from there. This is the area in the back of the Ulam where the knives used by the Kohanim are stored.

7. Abaye says that Rebbi Yochanan is in agreement with Rebbi, who maintains that a Kohen who washes from the Kiyor must wash again each day, because it is Pasul with Linah. However, since it is only Pasul d'Rabanan, the Kohen is not required to wash his hands again for the Terumas ha'Deshen, since it is the first Avodah of the day, even though it is done before dawn. Rava says that Rebbi Yochanan is in partial agreement with Rebbi Elazar b'Rebbi Shimon, who maintains that Linah does not affect a Kohen who washed from the Kiyor. He agrees with him in the event that the Kohen washed before daybreak for the Terumas ha'Deshen, but not if he washed at night for the burning of the Eimurim.

8. However, if the Kohen leaves the Azarah entirely, there is a doubt about whether he must wash again from the Kiyor.

9. The Kohen came into contact with something which is Metamei the hands and not the rest of the body, such as Pigul or Nosar.

10. Even if he washes with a Kli Shares outside of the Azarah, or he immerses himself in a proper Mikvah, the Avodah that he does is Pasul.

11. Since he immediately went to the Mikvah and had He'erev Shemesh, perhaps he did not take his mind off the Avodah, and thus it is not necessary for him to wash his hands and feet again from the Kiyor.

12. According to Rebbi Yochanan, the Kohen may wash his hands even from an earthenware vessel outside the Azarah.
