SUMMARY

1. When the Aron ha'Kodesh was hidden, the Shemen ha'Mishchah, the cylinder of the Man, the staff of Aharon, and the chest which was sent as a gift by the Plishtim was hidden with it.

2. A king is anointed with the Shemen ha'Mishchah, which is smeared between the eyebrows in the form of a crown. A Kohen Gadol is anointed with the Shemen ha'Mishchah, which is smeared between the eyebrows in the form of the Greek letter Xi.

3. There is a disagreement about whether the Shemen ha'Mishchah is placed between the eyebrows before it is poured on the head, or after it is poured on the head.

4. Kings are anointed only next to a spring.

5. Rebbi Meir says that even a Kohen Gadol who was not anointed with the Shemen ha'Mishchah brings a Par as a Korban Chatas. The Chachamim disagree.

6. Rebbi Meir says that the only difference between a Kohen Gadol who is presently serving and a Kohen Gadol who served in the past is the Par brought on Yom Kippur. The Minchas Chavisin may be brought only by the Kohen Gadol presently serving.

7. Rebbi Yosi says that the Kohen Gadol who is no longer serving may not act as a Kohen Gadol or as a Kohen Hedyot.

8. A Kohen Gadol Mashu'ach Milchamah may not allow his hair to grow long, he may not rip his clothing over a Mes, he may not become Tamei to his relatives, he may marry only a Besulah, and he may not marry a widow.

9. There is a disagreement about whether the death of a Kohen Mashu'ach Milchamah frees an unintentional murderer from the city of refuge.

10. Rebbi Akiva says that a Kohen Gadol who developed a permanent blemish and can never again do the Avodah is still not allowed to marry anyone but a Besulah.

11. When the relative of a Kohen Gadol dies, he may rip his garment only from the bottom. A Kohen Hedyot rips his garment from the top.

12. That which is more common is given precedence over that which is less common. That with more Kedushah is given precedence over that with less Kedushah.

A BIT MORE

1. Yoshiyahu hid the Aron because he foresaw that Yerushalayim would be captured and the Beis Ha'Mikdash would be destroyed.

2. The Greek letter Xi looks like an X.

3. According to one opinion, the smearing of the oil is most important. According to another opinion, the pouring of the oil is most important.

4. The spring symbolizes that his kingship should have longevity, like the constant flow of a spring.

5. The Chachamim rule that a Kohen Gadol who was not anointed with the Shemen ha'Mishchah brings a Kisbah or a Se'irah as a Korban Chatas, not a Par.

6. The Kohen Gadol who served in the past may do the Avodah on Yom Kippur. All of the other laws of a Kohen Gadol apply to him, according to Rebbi Meir.

7. He may not do the Avodah of a Kohen Gadol because it may cause friction with the present Kohen Gadol. He may not serve as a Kohen Hedyot because a person may only ascend in Kedushah and may not descend.

8. However, the other laws which apply to a Kohen Gadol do not apply to a Kohen Mashu'ach Milchamah: he may not do the Avodah on Yom Kippur, he does not wear the eight garments of a Kohen Gadol, he may not do the Avodah while he is an Onen, he does not have first choice to bring a Korban and to take a portion from a Korban, and he is Chayav a Korban for entering the Beis ha'Mikdash or eating Kodesh in a state of Tum'ah, unlike a Kohen Gadol.

9. According to Rebbi Shimon, his death frees the murderer. The Chachamim disagree.

10. A Kohen Gadol who becomes a Metzora also may marry only a Besulah.

11. Rav says that a Kohen Gadol rips his garment literally from the bottom of the garment, while a Kohen Hedyot rips his garment from the top of the garment by the neck. Shmuel says that a Kohen Gadol rips the garment from the top, but below the neck. A Kohen Hedyot rips it from the neck.

12. A Kohen has more Kedushah than a Yisrael. He is given precedence to be called up to the Torah, to recite the blessing of the Zimun, and to choose his portion first.
