SUMMARY

1. If a person swears he will not eat dirt, there is a Safek whether he is Chayav for eating less than the size of an olive of dirt.
 
2. If a person vows that he will not eat even less than the size of an olive of a particular loaf of bread, he is Chayav a Korban for eating less than the size of an olive.
 
3. If a person vows that he will not taste a particular loaf of bread, he is Chayav for eating less than the size of an olive.
 
4. If a person prohibits himself from eating a loaf of bread with a Konam, he is Chayav for eating less than the size of an olive.
 
5. A person says, "It shall be forbidden for me to eat from these two loaves of bread with a Konam." If he eats the size of an olive from the two breads combined, he is Chayav.
 
6. A person says, "I swear I will not eat these two breads." The Tana Kama maintains that if he eats the size of an olive from the two breads combined, he is not Chayav. Rebbi Meir disagrees.
 
7. A person prohibits himself from eating a loaf of bread with a Konam, and then he eats from it. He is not Chayav a Korban Me'ilah according to Rebbi Meir; the Rabanan disagree.
 
8. A person swears that he will not eat and then he eats dirt. He is exempt from a Korban.
 
9. If a person swears he will not eat grape seeds, there is a Safek if he is Chayav for eating less than the size of an olive.
 
10. If a Nazir swears that he will not eat grape seeds, he is not Chayav for less than an olive.
 
11. If a person swears that he will not eat and then he drinks, he is Chayav a Korban.

A BIT MORE

1. Since dirt is inedible, the Shi'ur of an olive may not apply.
 
2. Even the Rabanan who say that a person is Chayav a Korban only for eating the size of an olive agree that if he specifies in his vow that he will not eat even less than the size of an olive he is Chayav.
 
3. Even the Rabanan agree that if he vows that he will not taste a loaf of bread he is Chayav for less than the size of an olive because "tasting" implies even a minute amount.
 
4. Even the Rabanan agree that a person is Chayav for less than the size of an olive. When one makes a Konam, it is tantamount to specifying that he is forbidding himself even less than the size of an olive.
 
5. A Konam usually does not require a Shi'ur. However, if he says, "Eating this bread shall be forbidden like a Konam," it requires a Shi'ur of an olive.
 
6. The Tana Kama maintains that since it is considered two separate Shevu'os, there is a separate Chiyuv Chatas for each bread. If he eats the size of an olive from each bread he must bring two Korbenos Chatas. Consequently, the two breads do not combine for a Shi'ur.
 
7. The Rabanan maintain that if the person who made the Neder eats from the bread, he must bring a Korban Me'ilah. If someone else benefits from it, he is exempt from a Korban.
 
8. Since dirt is not edible, it is not included in the Shevu'ah. If a person swears that he will not eat dirt, it is a Safek whether he is Chayav for eating less than the size of an olive.
 
9. If the answer to the previous Safek of Rava is that a person is Chayav for eating dirt less than the size of an olive, it is a Safek if that is the case regarding grape seeds as well. Since seeds are not eaten by themselves and are only eaten together with the grape, perhaps it has the same law as dirt, and a person is Chayav for eating less than the size of an olive. On the other hand, perhaps grape seeds are no different than any other food, and therefore one is Chayav only for eating the size of an olive.
 
10. If the answer to the previous Safek of Rava is that a person is not Chayav for eating grape seeds less than the size of an olive, then a Nazir who swears he will not eat grape seeds is also not Chayav for eating grape seeds less than the size of an olive even though he is prohibited from eating grape seeds the size of an olive even without his Shevu'ah.
 
11. Drinking is also regarded as eating and therefore it is included in the Shevu'ah.
