SHABBOS 83 (5 Sivan) - This Daf has been dedicated l'Zecher Nishmas Reb Chaim Aryeh ben Aharon Stern Z'L, by Shmuel Gut of Brooklyn N.Y.

SUMMARY

1. The laws of Zivah do not apply to a Nochri, according to the Torah.

2. The Gemara is unsure about whether pieces of an idol are Tamei.

3. While it is forbidden to serve any idol regardless of how small it is, only an idol that is a k'Zayis (or larger) is Tamei.

4. The Mishnah states that a boat does not become Tamei.

5. The Gemara explains what we derive from the verse, "This is the Torah, when a person dies in a tent."

A BIT MORE

1. This is derived from the words "Bnei Yisrael" in the verse of Zivah. However, the Rabanan decreed that Zivah applies to Nochrim.

2. According to one version, this question applies when the pieces can be put together easily by an ordinary person. According to another version, this question applies when the pieces cannot be put together easily, but rather it requires a professional.

3. This is derived from a verse which compares an idol to a dead person. Just as a piece of a corpse is Tamei only when it is at least a k'Zayis, an idol also is only Tamei when it is a k'Zayis.

4. This is true about an ordinary wooden boat. There is a dispute about whether this applies to a small boat or an earthenware boat.

5. Some say this means that even when a person is dying, it is appropriate for him to learn Torah. Others say this means that Torah is found only in a person who "kills himself" over the Torah (that is, he puts tremendous effort into his learning).
