12th CYCLE DEDICATION
SOTAH 2 - Dedicated by HaGaon HaRav Yosef Pearlman of London, England, l'Iluy Nishmas his father, ha'Rabbani Reb Rephael David ben Yosef Yitzchak Pearlman, who passed away on Pesach Sheni 5758.

SUMMARY

There must be two witnesses present when a husband warns his wife not to seclude herself with a certain man.

If she secludes herself with the man for the Shi'ur of Tum'ah in front of one witness she is a Safek Sotah according to Rebbi Eliezer. (1)

Rebbi Yehoshua holds that there must be two witnesses present when the wife secludes herself with the man.

If the wife talks to the man without secluding herself she is not a Sotah.

A Safek Sotah is forbidden to her husband and she may not eat Terumah. (2)

If the husband of a Safek Sotah dies without children she does Chalitzah with the brother, but not Yibum.

Anyone who witnesses the disgrace of a Sotah will become a Nazir. (3)

According to the Tana of our Mishnah it is forbidden for a husband to be Mekanei his wife.

Hashem Yisbarach arranges a person's second Zivug in accordance with his deeds.

A second Zivug is more difficult to make than Keri'as Yam Suf.

Forty days prior to the birth of a child a Bas Kol announces Bas Ploni to Ploni and Sadeh (field) Ploni to Ploni.

If one witness testifies that a woman was Mezaneh he is believed and she is prohibited to her husband forever. (4)

Anytime the Pasuk states Ed it is a reference to two witnesses.

A testimony is only valid if there are at least two witnesses.

Rebbi Yosi Bar Yehudah says that no witnesses are required when a husband warns his wife, but two witnesses are required for the seclusion.

A woman only becomes a Safek Sotah if she is secluded with the man for the Shi'ur of Tum'ah.

A person should not warn his wife nowadays not to seclude herself with a certain man. (5)

It is a Machlokes Amora'im whether it is permitted for a husband to warn his wife not to seclude herself with a certain man.

A BIT MORE

1. She is forbidden to her husband mi'Safek until she drinks the bitter water.

2. If her husband is a Kohen she may not eat Terumah.

3. Because wine leads to immorality.

4. Since she was definitely Mezaneh she is not eligible to drink the bitter water.

5. Because maybe the Halachah follows the opinion of Rebbi Yosi Bar Yehudah who says that no witnesses are required when a husband warns his wife, and maybe she will seclude herself in front of two witnesses and since there is no bitter water nowadays she will be forbidden forever to her husband.

BRIEF INSIGHT

EVERYTHING IS FROM HEAVEN

The Gemara says that a first Zivug is not arranged in accordance with the couple's deeds because it is predestined forty days prior to birth. Rashi asks that Hashem Yisbarach knows everything that will occur in the future so why cannot the first Zivug also be in accordance with their future deeds? Rashi answers that everything is from Heaven with the exception of fear of Heaven and therefore whether a person will be a Tzadik or Rasha is dependent on the choice each person will make.

QUICK HALACHAH

AN IMPROPER KINUY

If the husband warned his wife in front of two people not to talk to Ploni, it is not a Kinuy, and even though she secludes herself with him in front of witnesses for the Shi'ur of Tum'ah she is not forbidden to her husband and she does not drink the Mei Sotah. (Rambam Hilchos Sotah 1:3)
