SUMMARY

1. There are various opinions regarding how many Aliyos are read on Yom Tov, on Yom Kippur, and on Shabbos.

2. The person who reads the Haftarah (from the Prophets) must first read from the Torah.

3. There is a dispute about whether the Maftir is one of the seven Aliyos that must be given on Shabbos.

4. The Mishnah mentions many things that are done only in the presence of ten men.

5. We mention the name "Elokeinu" during Zimun only when ten men are present.

A BIT MORE

1. Our custom follows the opinion of Tana d'Vei Rebbi Yishmael, who says that five Aliyos are read on Yom Tov, six on Yom Kippur, and seven on Shabbos. It is permitted to add to these Aliyos, but not to give fewer than these Aliyos.

2. This Aliyah is commonly known as Maftir.

3. The reasoning of the opinion that Maftir is not counted as one of the seven Aliyos on Shabbos is that he reads from the Torah only in order to read the Haftarah.

4. This includes, for example, the Torah reading, the Haftarah reading, and Birkas Kohanim.

5. This is because it is only an appropriate form of honoring Hashem to mention this name when ten or more men are present.
