SUMMARY
Tana Kama: If a woman makes a Neder prohibiting her handiwork on her husband, there is no need for the husband to annul the Neder. (1) Rebbi Akiva: If a woman makes a Neder prohibiting her handiwork on her husband, the husband should annul the Neder because she may produce a surplus of handiwork. (2) Tana Kama: The Metzi'ah of the wife belongs to the husband. Rebbi Akiva: The wife may keep it. (3) If a wife does a number of Melachos at the same time, there is a doubt about whether she may keep the handiwork, according to Rebbi Akiva. One who spits on his friend, strips off his Talis, or reveals a woman's hair must pay 400 Zuz for the embarrassment. (4) One who embarrasses a poor person from a prestigious family is exempt from paying the family for the embarrassment. If a father pledged a dowry to the Chasan but the Chasan dies, the father is not obligated to give the dowry to the Yavam. (5) If the father pledges a dowry of Kesef, the Chasan must commit in the Kesuvah to give to the wife an additional third, because he profits from the Kesef. If the father pledges a dowry of goods, the Chasan subtracts a fifth from what he writes in the Kesuvah. (6) The husband must buy for his wife ten Zuz worth of cosmetics for every Maneh that she brings in for her dowry. The daughter of Nakdimon ben Guriyon was given 400 gold pieces for cosmetics every single day. Fortunate is Klal Yisrael, for when we are doing the will of Hashem no nation can rule over us.
A BIT MORE
1. The Neder is not effective, since the handiwork belongs to the husband, not to the wife, and thus she has no right to prohibit it. 2. Rebbi Akiva maintains that the surplus handiwork that she earns (beyond the minimum amount she is required to give to her husband) through her extra hard work belongs to the wife and the Neder takes effect on this surplus handiwork. Therefore, the husband must annul the Neder. However, everyone agrees that any surplus handiwork for which the wife did not work extra hard in order to earn belongs to the husband. 3. A Metzi'ah has the same status as the surplus handiwork for which the wife worked extra hard to earn. According to Rebbi Akiva, just as the surplus handiwork belongs to the wife, so does her Metzi'ah. 4. However, if he spits on his friend's clothing, he is exempt. 5. Even if the Chasan was an Am ha'Aretz and the Yavam is a Talmid Chacham, the father may say to the Yavam, "I was willing to give it to the Chasan, but not to you." 6. This is because the goods depreciate, and also because they are often evaluated at an inflated price.

BRIEF INSIGHT
THE GREATNESS OF KLAL YISRAEL Fortunate is Klal Yisrael, for when we are doing the will of Hashem no nation can rule over us. However, when we are not doing the will of Hashem, we are given over to the hands of the lowest of nations. The Maharsha explains that all nations have a Mazal in heaven that looks after them, but Klal Yisrael has no Mazal; we are directly in the hands of Hashem Yisbarach. When we are doing the will of Hashem, we are placed above the Mazal and we rule over all of the nations. When we are not doing the will of Hashem, we are abandoned to our fate, and since we have no Mazal we are subject to the rule of other nations who do have a Mazal.
QUICK HALACHAH
PAYING FOR EMBARRASSMENT One who spits on his friend must pay for embarrassment, but if he spits on his clothing or embarrasses him verbally he is exempt. (Shulchan Aruch CM 420:38) One is exempt for spitting on clothing or for verbal embarrassment because the Torah obligates one to pay for Boshes only when the embarrassment is physical. (S'ma)
