BRIEF INSIGHT

TORAH LISHMAH

A person should not learn Torah for the purpose of being called a Chacham or a Rebbi, one shall learn out of love and honor will soon follow. The Maharsha says that there are three categories of learning she'Lo Lishmah: a person who learns for the purpose of being called a Rebbi, a person who learns in order to make a livelihood from the Torah and a person who learns in order to receive reward in the next world. Regarding someone who learns to receive reward in Olam ha'Ba our sages teach us that a person shall always learn she'Lo Lishmah because it will lead to learning Lishmah. However, regarding one who learns for the purpose of earning a livelihood our sages say "Do not make [the Torah] into a spade to dig with." Regarding someone who learns in order to receive honor, our sages say "Do not use it as a crown to make yourself great."

QUICK HALACHAH

WHEAT HARVEST

If someone makes a Neder until the Katzir without specifying which Katzir, it is forbidden until the wheat harvest. However if in that place most people grow barely then it is forbidden until the barley harvest. (Shulchan Aruch YD 220:14)

It is Asur until the barley harvest not because it is a Safek, rather we believe that he definitely had in mind the barley harvest since most people in his place grow barley. (Shach)
