12th Cycle dedication

CHULIN 59 - Dedicated by Rabbi Dr. Eli Turkel of Raanana, l'Iluy Nishmas his mother, Golda bas Chaim Yitzchak Ozer (Mrs. Gisela Turkel) who passed away on 25 Av 5760. Mrs. Turkel accepted Hashem's Gezeiros with love; may she be a Melitzas Yosher for her offspring and for all of Klal Yisrael.

SUMMARY

1. If a species of animal lacks front teeth, we can be certain that it chews its cud, has split hooves, and is Kosher, with the exception of a young camel.

2. If a species of animal has split hooves, we can be certain that it chews its cud and is Kosher, with the exception of the pig.

3. If a species of animal has a muscle under the hipbone that is separate from the bone both vertically and horizontally, we can be certain that it is Kosher, with the exception of a wild donkey.

4. According to the Tana Kama, if an animal has horns and narrow split hooves which come to a point, we can be certain that it is a Chayah and its Chelev is permitted. Rebbi Dosa disagrees.

5. An animal with branched horns is certainly a Chayah, according to Rebbi Dosa. If its horns are not branched, but they are layered and rounded and have grooves very close together, we can be certain that it is a Chayah.

6. A Keresh has only one horn, but it is considered to be a Chayah and its Chelev is permitted.

A BIT MORE

1. If one finds an animal whose hooves were severed and he does not know if it is a Kosher species of animal, if it lacks front teeth he can be certain that it is Kosher, as long as he knows that it is not a camel.

2. If one finds an animal with a mutilated mouth and it is not possible to check if it has front teeth, one must check the hooves. If they are split, he can be certain that it is Kosher, as long as he knows that it is not a pig.

3. If one finds an animal that has severed hooves and a mutilated mouth and it is not possible to check if it has front teeth or split hooves, he must examine the muscle under the hipbone. If it is both vertical and horizontal, he can be certain that it is Kosher, as long as he knows that is not a wild donkey.

4. According to Rebbi Dosa, if an animal has horns, there is no need to look at the hooves. It certainly is a Chayah.

5. The goat of Kurkuz has horns which are grooved and rounded but not layered, and it was subject to a dispute about whether layered horns were an essential prerequisite for a Chayah.

6. A Keresh is identified as a huge deer, sixteen Amos long, found in the region of Bei Ila'i.
