BRIEF INSIGHT

GRAFTING A BRANCH OF ORLAH

If a branch with fruit of Orlah is grafted onto an old tree the fruit of Orlah remains prohibited even if it grows an extra 200 times its original size. The Rashba and Ran say that if the branch came from a tree of Orlah but did not have any fruit at the time it was grafted any fruit that grows afterwards is permitted. Only fruit that was preexisting remains forbidden after it is grafted onto the old tree, even though it grew 200 times more after the grafting. The Isur is a Chumra mid'Rabanan because he is trying to be Mevatel an Isur, but if there is no fruit at the time of the grafting the fruit that grows is permitted because he is not attempting to be Mevatel an Isur.

UPROOTING KIL'AYIM

If an onion is planted in a vineyard and the vineyard is uprooted and the onion subsequently grew 200 times its original size the original onion remains forbidden. (Shulchan Aruch YD 296:18)

The Shulchan Aruch implies that only the original onion remains forbidden, but not what grew after the onion was uprooted, however the Ran says that the entire onion is forbidden. (Gra)
