PAST DEDICATIONS YOMA 42 - Two weeks of study material have been dedicated by Mrs. Estanne Abraham Fawer to honor the Yahrzeit of her father, Rav Mordechai ben Eliezer Zvi (Rabbi Morton Weiner) Z'L, who passed away on 18 Teves 5760. May the merit of supporting and advancing Dafyomi study -- which was so important to him -- during the weeks of his Yahrzeit serve as an Iluy for his Neshamah. |

SUMMARY
1. When the death of a Torah scholar named Ravya bar Kisi was mourned, it was like the "atonement of the goat sent away (to Azazel)." 2. There is a dispute about whether a non-Kohen may slaughter the bull of the Kohen Gadol's or the Parah Adumah. 3. The sprinkling of the water with the ashes of the Parah Adumah may be done only during the day. 4. Almost all of the services of the Parah Adumah must be performed during daytime, and by a man. 5. The Mishnah says that if the Parah Adumah did not want to move, they would not goad it to walk by having a black cow walk next to it for it to follow.

A BIT MORE
1. This is because the death of the righteous is an atonement for the people. 2. Rav: The Parah Adumah must be slaughtered by a Kohen or it is invalid. The bull of the Kohen Gadol on Yom Kippur does not need to be slaughtered by a Kohen. Shmuel: The Kohen Gadol's bull must be slaughtered by a Kohen or it is invalid. The Parah Adumah does not need to be slaughtered by a Kohen. 3. Also, the sprinkling may not be performed by a woman. 4. However, gathering its ashes after it is burned, filling up the vessel with water, and mixing the ashes with the water may be performed at night and by a woman. 5. This is because they did not want people to think that they in fact were slaughtering the black cow.
