CHULIN 31-43 - Two weeks of study material have been dedicated by Mrs. Estanne Abraham Fawer to honor the Yahrzeit of her father, Rav Mordechai ben Eliezer Zvi (Rabbi Morton Weiner) Z'L, who passed away on 18 Teves 5760. May the merit of supporting and advancing Dafyomi study -- which was so important to him -- during the weeks of his Yahrzeit serve as an Iluy for his Neshamah.

SUMMARY

1. If a Parah Adumah is slaughtered and another animal is slaughtered unintentionally along with it, the Shechitah of the Parah Adumah is Pasul, while the Shechitah of the other animal is valid, according to Rebbi Nasan.

2. According to the Rabanan, the Shechitah of the Parah Adumah is valid, while the Shechitah of the animal slaughtered with it is Pasul.

3. If one intentionally cuts a pumpkin at the same time he performs Shechitah to the Parah Adumah, the Shechitah of the Parah Adumah is Pasul.

4. If one paused in the middle of the Shechitah for the amount of time that it takes to perform a complete Shechitah, the Shechitah is Pasul according to the Tana Kama. Rebbi Shimon disagrees.

5. Rav maintains that if one paused during the Shechitah of a bird for the amount of time that it takes to perform a complete Shechitah of a bird, the Shechitah is Pasul. Shmuel and Rebbi Yochanan disagree.

6. Rebbi Yosi bar Chanina maintains that if one pauses during the Shechitah of a small animal for the amount of time that it takes to slaughter a small animal, the Shechitah is Pasul. If one delays the Shechitah of a large animal for the amount of time that it takes to slaughter a large animal, the Shechitah is Pasul.

7. If an animal is slaughtered with a blunt knife which does not cut well, even if the Shechitah takes an entire day it is valid.

8. If one cut the esophagus of the animal and ripped out the trachea, or he cut one Siman and waited until the animal died, or he inserted the knife under the second Siman before he cut it from underneath, the animal is a Neveilah.

9. Reish Lakish maintains that if the trachea was cut and the lung was subsequently punctured before the cutting of the esophagus, the animal is Kosher.

10. Rava explains that Reish Lakish admits that if the stomach was punctured after the cutting of the trachea, the animal is a Tereifah.

A BIT MORE

1. Rebbi Nasan maintains that an unintentional Shechitah is valid. Therefore, the Shechitah of the other animal is valid. The Shechitah of the Parah Adumah is Pasul, since a Gezeiras ha'Kasuv states that if another animal is slaughtered along with the Parah Adumah, the Shechitah of the Parah Adumah is Pasul.

2. According to the Rabanan, an unintentional Shechitah is not valid. Therefore, the Shechitah of the other animal is Pasul, and, consequently, the Shechitah of the Parah Adumah is valid. If one performs a Melachah at the same time as he performs the Shechitah of the Parah Adumah, the Shechitah is Pasul. However, an unintentional Shechitah is not considered to be a Melachah.

3. Since a Melachah was done at the same time as the Shechitah of the Parah Adumah, the Shechitah is Pasul. However, if the pumpkin was cut unintentionally, the Shechitah of the Parah Adumah is valid.

4. According to Rebbi Shimon, if the delay was for the amount of time it takes for the Shochet to check his knife, the Shechitah is Pasul.

5. Shmuel and Rebbi Yochanan take a more lenient position than Rav. They maintain that the Shechitah of a bird is invalidated only if it was delayed for the time that it takes to slaughter an animal.

6. Rebbi Yosi bar Chanina agrees with Rav that if one pauses during the Shechitah of a bird for the amount of time that it takes to slaughter a bird, the Shechitah is Pasul. However, he goes further and maintains that if one pauses during the Shechitah of a small animal for the amount of time that it takes to slaughter a small animal, the Shechitah is Pasul.

7. However, if there were delays during the Shechitah, even if each delay was short but they added up to the time that it takes to slaughter a complete animal, there is a doubt about whether the Shechitah is valid.

8. Rebbi Yeshevav instituted a rule in the name of Rebbi Yehoshua: whenever there is a Pesul in the Shechitah, the animal is a Neveilah, but if the Shechitah was valid and another factor caused it to be Pasul, the animal is a Tereifah. Although Rebbi Akiva originally disagreed with Rebbi Yeshevav, he ultimately he agreed with him.

9. The lung is connected to the trachea, and when the trachea is cut it is considered as though the trachea and the lung together have been taken out of the animal and placed in a basket. Therefore, a punctured lung does not render the animal a Tereifah.

10. Since the stomach is not connected to the trachea, a punctured stomach renders the animal a Tereifah if the esophagus has not yet been cut.
