A BIT MORE
1. This is the strongest proof that one should not rely on his righteousness until the day he dies. 2. Rav: it is merely a shortened version of each blessing. Shmuel: it is a short prayer called "Havinenu" which encapsulates all of the middle blessings of Shemoneh Esreh into one blessing. 3. For example, if he forgot to say "Ya'aleh v'Yavo" on Rosh Chodesh, he must repeat Shemoneh Esreh if he has already taken his steps back. 4. Some say this means that one should not pray in a way that gives the appearance that praying is a burden to him. 5. The Gemara describes this prayer as a way of "asking permission" to travel and beseeching Hashem to provide the traveler with protection from the dangers of the journey.
