SUMMARY
1. If several Kohanim wanted to perform the Terumas ha'Deshen, they would have a race to the top of the Mizbe'ach. 2. If more than one Kohen reached the top of the Mizbe'ach first, they conducted a type of lottery. 3. It is forbidden to count Jews. 4. The Gemara explains the apparent contradiction between the verses regarding the future number of Jews. 5. A Jewish leader is supposed to have some family history that is not pristine.

A BIT MORE
1. When many Kohanim were present, they would all race to the top of the Mizbe'ach, and whoever was the first to reach the area that was four Amos away from the top of the Mizbe'ach would perform the Terumas ha'Deshen. 2. They eventually stopped allowing the race entirely after one Kohen accidentally pushed his friend off the Mizbe'ach during the race, causing him to break his leg. 3. We derive this from the fact that Shaul ha'Melech counted Bnei Yisrael by having each person give a sheep, and then he counted the sheep. 4. One verse says, "like the grains of sand," and another says, "they will not be able to be counted." One answer is that when Bnei Yisrael do what Hashem wants, they become too many to be counted at all, as opposed to when they are not doing what Hashem wants. 5. This is in order that he be reminded that if he does not act properly, he will end up like his less-than-pristine family in the past.
