SUMMARY

Beis Hillel says that we should sing in front of the Kalah, "Kalah Na'eh v'Chasudah." (1)

If a friend buys something in the market, you should praise the purchase even if the item is flawed.

The Chachamim say that a person should always put his mind to [the needs] of his fellow men.

In Eretz Yisrael, they sang in front of the Kalah, "She has no Kechol, Serak (cosmetics), or Pirchus (hairdo), and yet she radiates Chen."

Rav Shmuel bar Yitzchak would juggle three branches of Hadas in front of a Kalah. (2)

A funeral procession is diverted to make way for the procession of a Kalah, but both must make way for a Jewish king.

Although some opinions allow a Nasi to relinquish his honor, a king may never relinquish his honor.

We must interrupt learning Torah for the purpose of a funeral and for Hachnasas Kalah. (3)

For the funeral of a person who was knowledgeable in Mikra and Mishnah, there should be at least 600,000 people in attendance. (4)

For the funeral of a person who taught Torah, there is no limit to how many should attend his funeral.

In Bavel, they rubbed oil on the heads of the Torah students at the wedding of a Besulah.

A Chazakah made on the property of a Katan is not valid, even if the Chazakah continued after he became a Gadol.

If the owner of a field fled out of concern for his life, a Chazakah on his field is not valid. If he fled for monetary reasons, the Chazakah is valid.

A Chazakah is not valid if the owner is in Yehudah and the Chazakah is made in Galil, or vice versa. (5)

A BIT MORE

1. Beis Shamai says that we should sing in front of the Kalah, "Kalah Kemos she'Hi" -- the praises are in accordance with her attributes.

2. When he died, a pillar of light separated him from everybody who was present. We have a tradition that such an event occurs only once or twice in a generation.

3. However, if there is sufficient attendance at the funeral, it is not necessary for one to interrupt his Torah learning.

4. Just as the Torah was given with 600,000 people in attendance, so too when it is taken away there should be 600,000 people in attendance.

5. Even though, normally, a Chazakah that is not made in the same place as the owner is a valid Chazakah, the Mishnah is referring to a time of Cherem when travel between Yehudah and Galil is curtailed.

BRIEF INSIGHT

NO COSMETICS ARE NECESSARY

Beis Hillel said to Beis Shamai, "According to your words, if someone purchases an item from the market, should we praise it or denigrate it? Certainly, we should praise it!" The Rashash asks, why did Beis Hillel say, "According to your words"? The Rashash answers that if somebody purchased something from a store where it is possible to get a refund, then certainly if you see that the item is flawed it is a Mitzvah to point it out so that the buyer can return it. However, if the item was bought from the market where is impossible to return the item, you should not point out any defect since he cannot return it. For this reason, Beis Hillel said to Beis Shamai, "According to *your* words"; Beis Shamai maintains that a person may not divorce his wife for any reason, unless she strays from her husband, and therefore marrying a wife is the same as purchasing something from a place where it cannot be returned, so there is no point in pointing out any flaws since he is not allowed to divorce her.

QUICK HALACHAH

SIMCHAS CHASAN V'KALAH

It is a Mitzvah to gladden a Chasan and Kalah and to dance in front of them, and to say that she is "Na'eh v'Chasudah" even if she is not Na'eh. [Even] Rebbi Yehudah bar Ila'i danced in front of a Kalah. We must interrupt learning Torah for the purpose of a funeral or for Hachnasas Kalah. It is forbidden to stare at the Kalah, but it is permissible to look at her jewelry and her hair. (Shulchan Aruch EH 65:1-2)
