A BIT MORE
1. The Torah forbids selling land to Nochrim in Eretz Yisrael. An additional prohibition prohibits selling a field to a Nochri in Eretz Yisrael, because the land thereby becomes exempt from Ma'aser. 2. According to Rebbi Meir, although Suryah was captured by David ha'Melech on his own initiative, without the participation of 600,000 members of Klal Yisrael, it still is regarded as part of Eretz Yisrael. The Torah forbids selling land in Suriyah to Nochrim. The Rabanan were more lenient in Suryah and allowed the renting of houses to Nochrim. However, they made a Gezeirah and prohibited the renting of fields to Nochrim, because selling a field to a Nochri entails two prohibitions. 3. According to Rebbi Yosi, since Suryah was captured by David ha'Melech without the participation of 600,000 members of Klal Yisrael, it does not have the status of Eretz Yisrael. Therefore, according to Torah law one is permitted to sell land there to Nochrim. However the Rabanan made a Gezeirah and prohibited the sale of fields to Nochrim, since in Eretz Yisrael selling a field to a Nochri entails two prohibitions. 4. According to Rebbi Meir, since selling a field in Eretz Yisrael to a Nochri entails two prohibitions, the Rabanan made a Gezeirah and prohibited the sale of a field to a Nochri even in Chutz la'Aretz. Rebbi Yosi maintains that since Chutz la'Aretz is distant from Eretz Yisrael, even though the Rabanan made a Gezeirah in Suryah prohibiting the sale of fields to Nochrim, the Gezeirah does not apply in Chutz la'Aretz. 5. The Rabanan were concerned that three Nochrim live together in a Jewish neighborhood, they might cause harm to the Jews. 6. Although it is possible that the Nochri will sell two houses to two other Nochrim, and three Nochrim will be living together, we are not concerned with that possibility. 7. A house that is rented out remains in the possession of the Jewish owner. It is forbidden for a Jew to allow an Avodah Zarah to be brought into his house. 8. There is a concern that people who are aware that the bathhouse belongs to a Jew will think that the Nochrim operating the bathhouse are doing so as agents of the Jewish owner. 9. The people will not think that the Nochri is an agent of the Jewish owner to work on Shabbos. Instead, they will assume that he is a sharecropper working for his share.
