12th Cycle Dedication

ERCHIN 11 - Two weeks of study material have been dedicated by Mrs. Estanne Abraham Fawer to honor the twelfth Yahrzeit of her father, Rav Mordechai ben Eliezer Zvi (Rabbi Morton Weiner) Z'L, who passed away on 18 Teves 5760. May the merit of supporting and advancing Dafyomi study -- which was so important to him -- during the weeks of his Yahrzeit serve as an Iluy for his Neshamah.

SUMMARY

1. There is a discussion about what was the main component of the song sung in the Beis ha'Mikdash.

2. Did the fact that a person sang as a Levi prove that he indeed was a Levi?

3. Does the absence of song for the Korban invalidate the Korban?

4. A Levi who sings is punished if he serves as a gatekeeper (see below).

5. There is a question about whether a Levi who is a singer may help a gatekeeper perform his service.

A BIT MORE

1. One opinion is that it was the singing of the Leviyim, and the musical instruments merely accompanied the singing. The other opinion says that the music of the instruments was the main component, and the singing accompanied the music.

2. One opinion says that this was no proof, and therefore one may not rely on this to assume that the supposed Levi is of good lineage in order to give him Ma'aser Rishon. The other opinion says that if he sang in the Beis ha'Mikdash, he may be presumed to be of good lineage, and he may be given Ma'aser Rishon.

3. Rebbi Meir says that it does, since the verse states that the Leviyim atone for Bnei Yisrael, implying that just as a lack of atonement invalidates, so does the lack of song of the Leviyim. The Chachamim say that it does not invalidate the Korban.

4. The Gemara states that a Levi designated as a singer may not act as a gatekeeper, and vice versa. One opinion says that a singer who serves as a gatekeeper is executed. Another opinion says that he has transgressed a negative prohibition but is not punished with death.

5. Rebbi Yochanan ben Gudgeda understands that the Rabanan forbade helping due to a decree that one might come to perform the actual service himself. Rebbi Yehoshua ben Chananyah understands that the Rabanan never decreed that it is forbidden to help.
