12th Cycle Dedication

ERCHIN 6-9 - Two weeks of study material have been dedicated by Mrs. Estanne Abraham Fawer to honor the twelfth Yahrzeit of her father, Rav Mordechai ben Eliezer Zvi (Rabbi Morton Weiner) Z'L, who passed away on 18 Teves 5760. May the merit of supporting and advancing Dafyomi study -- which was so important to him -- during the weeks of his Yahrzeit serve as an Iluy for his Neshamah.

SUMMARY

1. If a person with a total of five Sela says, "I pledge two set values of myself, each worth 50 Sela," there is a doubt about how much he must pay for each.

2. Tzara'as is analyzed for at least one week, and can be analyzed for up to three weeks.

3. There is a minimum of four leap months, and a maximum of eight leap months, every year.

4. The Shtei ha'Lechem are either two or three days old when they are eaten.

5. The loaves of the Lechem ha'Panim (showbreads) are eaten when they are at least nine days old, and can be up to eleven days old.

A BIT MORE

1. One might say that because he pledged them all at the same time, he must pay two and a half Sela for each pledge. Alternatively, it could be that he must pay five for one and the rest remains outstanding. The Gemara leaves this question unresolved ("Teiku").

2. A person who has signs of Tzara'as is quarantined for one week, and he technically can be declared Tahor after that week. Tzara'as in a house can take up to three weeks until it is finished being analyzed.

3. This arrangement was established so that that the calendar would comply with the many requirements of the structure of the Jewish year. This will be explained in part later (Daf 9).

4. Since the baking of the Shtei ha'Lechem does not override Shabbos or Yom Tov, they generally are baked Erev Shavuos and eaten on Shavuos. If Shavuos falls on Sunday, they are baked on Friday and eaten on Sunday.

5. They are generally eaten when they are nine days old, as they are baked on Erev Shabbos and eaten the next Shabbos. However, if two days of Rosh Hashanah fall before or after Shabbos, they can be up to eleven days old when they are eaten.
