DAF DISCUSSIONS - ZEVACHIM 77

Moishe Luftig asks:

L'chvod HoRabbonin Shlita.

I went on your gevaldige website to check a question I had on the machlokes R' Eliezer and the Rabbonon with regards to eivorei chatos and oiloh that get mixed up. R' Eliezer holds it gets burnt on the Mizbeach as eitzim and the Rabbonon do not allow this because of Lo Saktiru Mimenu, therefore it is left to become noisar and taken to the Beis Hadoshen.

The question I had was does R' Eliezer hold that the entire mixture is burnt as eitzim, or only the Chatos need be burnt as Etzim, but the Olah part of the mixture does not need any particular intention. My initial answer would be only the Chatos but from the meforshim in the Gemoro Sotah 23b I am not so sure any more. I therefore checked on your website to see if it is mentioned.

I noticed that the Revach l'daf on Zevochim 77a, summary note 4 says If the limbs of a Korban Chatas become mixed with the limbs of a Korban Olah, Rebbi Eliezer says that the limbs may be placed on the Mizbe'ach and the limbs of the Chatas are considered Etzim.

However, in Sotah 23a, revach l'daf I notice the following R. Eliezer holds that if the limbs of a Chatas and Olah get mixed together the entire mixture should be placed l'Shem Eitzim (wood) on the Mizbe'ach. (4)

I am not sure if the wording in Sotah was deliberate or just meant to say that the entire mixture is put on (comma) and then Chatos part is not a problem because that (alone) is lsheim eitzim.

I look forward to hearing from you.

(While we make every effort to respond to every question promptly, once in a while a question somehow slips through the cracks. We found that your question had not been addressed, and so we are now sending you an answer. Our apologies.)

Moishe, I agree with you that the wording of Revach l'Daf to Sotah 23a ("the entire mixture should be placed l'Shem Eitzim") may be inappropriate, because Rashi (Sotah 23a, DH k'R"E) writes, "I look upon the meat of the Chatas on the Mizbe'ach as if it is wood," which implies that only the Chata'os need be burned as Etzim.
