DAF DISCUSSIONS - SANHEDRIN 5

boruch kahan asked:

sholom aleichem!Shkoyach for all answers to previous questions.

I have been through a gemoro with my son that he is learning in school. In mas. sanhedrin daf hey omud beys it brings at the top of the daf about Rav where we are told it was possible for him to be Moreh Horoah on animals for Bechoros because he was with a shepherd working with animals for 18 months. Now the Mesoras Hashass on the side has no comment on this but i have a strong recollection of learning this somewhere else in Shas either in another Gemoro or Tosofos in a different Masechto uses this Gemoro for a reason.Am i correct or is this the only place this is brought in all of Shas. Shkoyach for helping me with this shaaleh.

Kol Tuv and a Gitten Channukkah.

Reb Baruch,

I'm sorry, I cannot think of anywhere else where this was cited, nor could I find it with the help of a Talmud/Rishonim database. (The closest I could find was Eruvin 53a, "For 18 days I grew (Gidalti) by Rebbi Oshiya...")

Best wishes,

The Kollel replies:

While I did not find another source for your specific quote, I did come across the following. Rav Reuven Margoliyos' Sefer, Margoliyos ha'Yam, does connect this Gemara with two others:

1. Yevamos 16a where R. Akiva is criticized for not learning from shepherds and

2. Eruvin 13b where we are taught that the Halachah does not follow Rebbi Meir because he was too sharp for people to follow his logic and understand his conclusions.

Best wishes,
