TOSFOS DH SHE'ILMALEI KA'ASTI LO NISHTAYER, ETC.

(SUMMARY: Tosfos explains how it is possible to curse a nation in such a short period of time.)

(a)

Question: What can one possibly say in the space of a moment?

(b)

Answer #1: One can say 'K'leim (Finish them off)!'

(c)

Answer #2: Alternatively, as long as one starts the curse within that moment, it will do its damage even if one continues after the moment has terminated.

TOSFOS DH HA'HU TZEDOKI D'HAVAH B'SHIV'VUSEIH D'REBBI YEHOSHUA BEN LEVI ETC. LA'AV ORACH AR'A

(SUMMARY: Tosfos reconciles this Sugya with the Gemara in Avodah-Zarah.)

(a)

Implied Question: Even though we learned (in Avodah-Zarah) that 'One lowers Tzedokim into a pit, and does not pull them out from there?

(b)

Answer #1: That applies exclusively to doing so manually, but to do so bi'Yedei Shamayim is not correct; to punish them, to cause them trouble or to kill them by the Hand of Hash-m in an unnatural way.

(c)

Answer #2: If however, we have the text here 'Ovdei-Kochavim' (rather than Tzedokim), then the question falls away ...

Source: Since the Gemara says there that 'Nochrim and shepherds one neither pulls out nor does one push them in' (See Tosfos There (4: DH 'Sh'ma Minah').

TOSFOS DH LO HAYAH ADAM SHE'KAR'O ADON

(SUMMARY: Tosfos proves that Avraham was the first to call Hash-m Adon in the Pasuk cited by the Gemara.)

(a)

Question: But does the Torah not write "Blessed be Hash-m, the G-d of Sheim"?

(b)

Answer: The Name there is not spelt with 'Alef Daled', which is the Name that denotes 'Master'.

(c)

Question: Why does the Gemara not cite the Pasuk there in chapter 15 (Pasuk 2) "Hash-m (spelt 'Alef Daled') Elokim what will You give me...?", which is written earlier?

(d)

Answer: The Parshiyos are not written in order, and we have a principle that 'The Parshiyos of the Torah are not always written in their chronological sequence'. Consequently, the Pasuk of the B'ris bein ha'Besarim (Pasuk 8) was written earlier.

1.

Proof: And we are forced to say that, since Avraham was seventy years old at the time of the B'ris bein ha'Besarim, whereas "After these things" (Pasuk 1) was said after the battle with the kings (described in the previous chapter), as Rashi explains in the Chumash (See Pasuik 1).

2.

Proof (cont.): Whereas at the time of the B'ris נein ha'Besarim (the beginning of chapter 15), Avraham was seventy-three. (How is that?) ...

3.

Proof (cont.): The entire duration of S'dom was fifty-two years, as the Gemara says in the first Perek of Shabbos (11.). Deduct from that twelve years that they served Kedorla'omer and the thirteenth year of the rebellion (See 14:, and Rashi there), leaving twenty-six years of its tranquil existence.

4.

Proof (cont.): Now when S'dom was overturned, Avraham was ninety-nine, since the overturning took place one year prior to the birth of Yitzchak. Deduct the twenty-six years of tranquility, and it transpires that Avraham was seventy-three when the battle of the kings took place.

5.

Proof (cont.):That being the case, the Parshah of the B'ris bein ha'Besarim took place three years before "Achar ha'Devarim ha'Eileh", which ends with "and He (Hash-m) considered it an act of righteousness (that Avraham believed Him without question). And the Pasuk then goes on to write 'How do I know?", because was actually said earlier.

(e)

Proof (cont.): Based on this explanation the Rashbam resolves the discrepancy, that in one place it writes (in Pasuk 5) " ... and count the stars", implying that the episode took place by night; whilst in another (in Pasuk 12), it writes "And the sun set", implying that it took place during the day?

1.

Conclusion: A proof that they are two Parshiyos, which were not said at the same time, because 'The Parshiyos of the Torah are not always written in their chronological sequence'.
