BERACHOS 31 (14 Elul) – This Daf has been dedicated in honor of the Yahrzeit of Yisrael (son of Chazkel and Miryam) Rosenbaum, who passed away on 14 Elul, by his son and daughter and their families.

12TH CYCLE:

Dedicated by Rav Shalom Kelman in honor of Hagaon Rav Yehudah Copperman, author of the annotated edition of the Meshech Chochmah, and most recently "Mavo l'Limud Torah."

(d) What was Resh Lakish's reaction, when he heard this from his Rebbe?

2)

(a) According to the Beraisa, the criterion for beginning Amidah is not Koved Rosh, nor is it Din or a Devar Halachah. What then, is it?

(b) Why can the latter two not be criteria for beginning the Amidah?

(c) One of the examples of a Devar Halachah is 'ha'Meikiz Dam li'Beheimas Kodshim, Asur be'Hana'ah, u'Mo'alin Bah.' How does this tie up with the Din that there is no Me'ilah for using the blood of Kodshim?

3)

(a) In yet another Beraisa, the criterion that leads to Tefilah is 'Simchah shel Mitzvah'. How de we fulfill this criterion?

(b) The criterion for taking leave from a friend is a Devar Halachah. Which Devar Halachah did Rav Kahana and Rav Shimi bar Ashi discuss, when, as the latter was leaving Bavel, they arrived at 'those date-palms of Bavel'?

(c) What do we learn from the Pasuk "Tachin Libam, Takshiv Oznecha?

(d) How did Rebbi Akiva's Tefilah at home differ dramatically from his Tefilah in Shul, and why the difference?

4)

(a) What do we learn from the following Pesukim in Daniel

1. "ve'Keivan Pesichan Lei"?

2. " ve'Zimnin Telasa" ... "Di Hu Avdas mi'Kadmas De'na"?

(b) From where do we know that one cannot Daven all three Tefilos consecutively?

(c) What do we learn from the Pasuk in Shmuel "li'Shemo'a El ha'Rinah ve'El ha'Tefilah"?

(d) What may one say ...

1. ... after 'Emes ve'Yatziv'?

2. ... in 'Shomei'a Tefilah'?

3. ... after the last Berachah of the Amidah?

5)

(a) We learn many things from Chanah and from her Tefilah. What do we learn from ...

1. ... "ve'Chanah Hi Medaberes Al Libah"?

2. ... "Rak Sefaseha Na'os"?

3. ... "ve'Kolah Lo Yishama"?

(b) From where do we learn that ...

1. ... someone who is drunk is forbidden to Daven?

2. ... one is obligated to point out unsavory behaviour to the person who is guilty of it?

(c) Besides telling Eli that he was not a master in this matter, otherwise he would not have suspected her of something of which she was innocent, what else did Chanah mean when she said to Eli "Lo Adoni"?

31b----------------------------------------31b

6)

(a) What do we learn from Chanah's words ...

1. ... "ve'Yayin ve'Sheichar Lo Shosisi"?

2. ... "Al Titein Lifnei Bas Beliya'al?

(b) And what do we learn from Eli ha'Kohen's reply ...

1. ... "Lechi le'Shalom"?

2. ... "v'Elokei Yisrael Yitein es Sheilasech"?

7)

(a) Why did Chanah refer to Hash-m as 'Tzevakos' (as opposed to any other Name of Hash-m)?

(c) Why do some opinions disagree with this explanation, and how will they explain "Im Ra'oh Sir'eh"?

(d) Why did Chana refer to herself three times as 'Amasecha'?

8)

(a) Chanah asked Hash-m for "Zera Anashim" (in the plural). Since this can hardly be understood literally, what did she mean with this (apart from the two explanations: a man among men or a man who would anoint two men (Shaul and David)?

(b) How do we learn from the Pasuk "Ani ha'Ishah ha'Nitzeves Imchah ba'Zeh", that it is forbidden to sit within four Amos of someone who is Davening?

(c) How does one explain the juxtaposition of "va'Yishchatu es ha'Par" and "va'Yavi'u es ha'Na'ar El Eli"?

(d) And how do these two Pesukim connect with "El ha'Na'ar ha'Zeh Hispalalti"?
