FOOTNOTES:
==========
(1) A number of Rishonim rule like the Rabanan, such as Rabeinu Chananel, the Rif, Rav Hai Ga'on as quoted in the Rashba, the Re'ah, and the Ritva. The Rambam also rules like the Rabanan. However, the Be'hag rules like Rebbi Yehudah, and so rule Tosfos, the Rosh, and the Ra'avad. See Insights for a Halachic synopsis.

(2) As is clear from the Gemara 12a.

(3) So writes Tosfos in the name of the Be'hag, as well as other Rishonim. As for the Halachah is, the Shulchan Aruch quotes only the first opinion.

(4) According to the Rambam (Hilchos Berachos 8:13), this refers to what he wants to eat *now*. According to the Rosh, this refers to what he *usually* prefers to eat (see Insights 40:4). The Rosh adds that according to the opinion that Rebbi Yehudah and the Rabanan argue only when the two foods have the same blessing, if one food is "ha'Etz" and the other "ha'Adamah," in which case neither blessing takes precedence (according to those who argue with the Be'hag, see footnote 3), we *do not* go by whichever one is most preferred; rather, on whatever he chooses he may recite the blessing first. (This also seems to be Rashi's opinion on the beginning of 41a). However, the Bi'ur Halachah proves that the Rosh is a minority opinion in this matter, and all other Rishonim maintain that the food he prefers comes first.

(5) Here, also, the Rosh writes that when the two foods have different blessings, there is no precedence of one over the other, as we mentioned in footnote 4, even if one is of the Seven Species (according to the opinion that Rebbi Yehudah and the Rabanan argue only concerning two foods that have the same blessing).

(6) From the words of Tosfos (DH Amar Rebbi Yirmiyah) it seems that according to the Rabanan, there is no precedence whatsoever for foods that are mentioned earlier in the verse.

(7) This applies only when there are two fruits that have the same blessing. If their blessings are not the same, one opinion in the Gemara maintains that Rebbi Yehudah and the Rabanan are not arguing. Most Rishonim explain that according to both, one recites a blessing first on the fruit that he prefers, and there is no precedence for the Seven Species (Tosfos DH Aval Rishonim). However, the Rosh writes that there is no precedence even for the food one prefers. As we pointed out above (footnote 4), the Rosh here is a minority opinion.
