prepared by Rabbi Eliezer Chrysler of Kollel Iyun Hadaf
Rosh Kollel: Rabbi Mordecai Kornfeld
(a) What did Rabah extrapolate from the Mishnah in Rosh Hashanah, which writes that after the Churban Beis Hamikdash, Raban Yochanan ben Zakai instituted that they would accept the witnesses all day, regarding eating an egg that was born on the first day of Rosh Hashanah, on the second day?
(b) Abaye queried this from Rav and Shmuel. What did they say?
(c) But Rabah is quoting Raban Yochanan ben Zakai. How do we reconcile Rav and Shmuel with Raban Yochanan ben Zakai?
(a) Rav Yosef disagrees with Rabah. What does he say?
(b) What does Rav Yosef learn from the Pasuk in Yisro ...
1. ... "Lech Emor Lahem, Shuvu Lachem l'Oholeichem" (following "Heyu Nechonim li'Sheloshes Yamim, Al Tigshu el Ishah")?
2. ... "bi'Meshoch ha'Yovel, Heimah Ya'alu va'Har" (following "Gam ha'Tzon v'ha'Bakar Al Yir'u el Mul ha'Har ha'Hu")? Why can we not learn this from the first Derashah?
(c) What is the indication that the prohibition to ascend the mountain ought not to apply after the departure of the Shechinah?
(d) From where do we learn that it is not the place of a person that honors him, but the person who honors the place?
(a) What is the Din of Kerem Revai? What option does the Torah give the owner?
(b) From where do we learn this Din?
(c) What Takanah did Chazal institute regarding people who lived within a radius of one day's journey from Yerushalayim? What was the purpose of this Takanah?
(a) Why did Rebbi Eliezer want to declare his vineyard Hefker for the poor?
(b) What did his disciples tell him?
(c) What do we deduce from their words?
(d) Why do we need this third proof that 'Davar she'be'Minyan, Tzarich Minyan Acher l'Hatiro'?
(a) Why does the egg remain Asur, according to Rav Yosef? Perhaps Raban Yochanan ben Zakai permitted the egg at the same time as he permitted receiving the witnesses after Minchah?
(b) On what grounds does Abaye object to Rav Yosef's Chumra?
(c) Rav Ada and Rav Salmon agree with Abaye, but rule like Rav Yosef, though not for the same reason. What is their reason for forbidding the egg from one day of Rosh Hashanah to the other even after Raban Yochanan rescinded the original prohibition regarding the witnesses?
(d) Then why are we not also worried that if, at the time when there is no Beis Hamikdash (and there is therefore no Shir in which to err), the witnesses are permitted to testify all day, they may do the same after the Beis Hamikdash has been rebuilt?
(a) Rava disagrees with Rabah, who contended that we should permit the egg nowadays from Raban Yochanan ben Zakai's second Takanah. According to him, we cannot learn any leniency from that Takanah. Why not?
