TOSFOS DH Ki Al Zeh Bacharta me'Oni

(SUMMARY: Tosfos explains that Iyov was not poor.)

(a)

Explanation: These afflictions are better for you than if you were poor. He was wealthy, for we find that Iyov lost only animals, but he did not lose land, silver and gold.

(b)

Implied question: He said "I left my mother's womb empty, and I will return there (i.e. leave the world) empty"!

(c)

Answer: He consoled himself about his loss, that he should not be concerned for it, for in his death he will not take anything with him, like it says in Koheles "u'Me'umah Lo Yisa b'Amalo she'Yolech b'Yado."

(d)

Question: It says "va'Yitnu Lo Ish Keshitah Achas v'Nezem Zahav Echad"!

(e)

Answer: This is not because he was poor. Rather, they brought to him a gift.

TOSFOS DH Avi ha'Av v'Echav (pertains to Amud B)

(SUMMARY: Tosfos explains a consequence of Rava's mistake.)

(a)

Explanation: E.g. Avraham and Yakov in Esav's property. What is the law? Rava said that we learn from [our Mishnah] "the father precedes all his descendants." This teaches that Avraham is first.

(b)

Observation: According to [Rava's] mistake, a son would not inherit his father. Rather, the father [of the father] would be always precede the son;

1.

[Rava] thought that Avraham inherits when Esav dies and the property falls to Yitzchak. According to his words, that he thought that Avraham precedes Yakov, a son would not inherit his father.

TOSFOS DH veshe'Hayah Bechor Notel Shnei Chalakim

(SUMMARY: Tosfos explains unlike the Rashbam.)

(a)

(Poor) Explanation #1 (Rashbam): Even though when Chefer died, Tzlafchad was not alive, even so his daughters receive Tzlafchad's [extra] portion of Bechorah in Chefer's property, like the Tosefta in Bechoros teaches;

1.

Citation (Tosefta): How does a Bechor not receive Ra'uy like [he receives] Muchzak? If his father died in the life of his father, [the son] receives two portions in his father's property, but he does not receives two portions in his father's father's property;

2.

E.g. if Yakov died in the life of Yitzchak, Reuven, the Bechor, receives two portions in Yakov's property, but not in the property of his grandfather Yitzchak, for even if Yakov was alive when Yitzchak died, Yakov would not receive two portions, for he was Pashut (not a Bechor);

3.

Therefore, Reuven, who comes to inherit through the power of Yakov in Yitzchak's property, he receives only the Pashut portion of his father. Until here is from the Rashbam.

(b)

Rebuttal: He should not have explained so. Such a case is not called Ra'uy, this that Reuven does not receive two portions in Yitzchak's property!

(c)

Explanation #2: Rather, we call Ra'uy this that Reuven does not receive twice as much as his brothers in Yitzchak's property, for Yakov was never Muchzak in it, and it is Ra'uy.
