(According to Tosfos, this is true only according to the Rabanan who argue
with Rebbi Yehudah. According to Rebbi Yehudah, though, the land was
sanctified when the Beis ha'Mikdash was rebuilt, and we count the Shemitah
years from the beginning of the building of the second Beis ha'Mikdash.)

(3) These six years are not included in the count of years used for the
writing of Shetaros, as Rashi explains (9a, DH Neshayalei, based on the
Gemara, beginning of 10a).
(4) The Romans took control 180 years after Yavan took control over Yisrael,
as the Beraisa (9a) relates.
(5) This is in accordance with the Gemara's proof from the discrepancy in
the two Beraisos (one states that Rome ruled for 180 years and the other
states that Rome ruled for 206 years). The kingdom of Hurdus ruled for 103
years in Eretz Yisrael under the dominion of Rome, and it ended with the
